Unlike his other films, Pa Ranjith's Sarpatta Parambarai does not openly highlight oppression and caste inequality, which has branded him as an anti-caste filmmaker. Ranjith's film is a basic, very absorbing boxing drama about the struggle between two popular clans - Sarpatta and Idiyappam - that governed North Madras in the 1970s, breaking out from the image trap. At the same time, it's a significant tale of one man's struggle for equality and greatness. Arya plays Kabilan, a man from a community that has been denied fundamental possibilities and due recognition, and he must struggle to alter all of that.
